Lorsque j’avais six ans j’ai vu, une fois, une magnifique —é image, dans un livre sur la Forêt Vierge qui s’appelait « Histoires Vécues ». Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. Ça représentait un serpent boa qui avalait un fauve. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Bức tranh vẽ hình một con trăn đang nuốt một con thú dữ.

On disait dans le livre : « Les serpents boas avalent leur proie tout entière, sans la mâcher. In the book it said: ‘Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. Trong sách, người ta nói: ‘Loài trăn nuốt chửng cả con mồi, không nhai.
Ensuite ils ne peuvent plus bouger et ils dorment pendant les six mois de leur digestion. » After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.’ Sau chúng chẳng nhúc nhích gì được nữa và ngủ sáu tháng liền để tiêu hóa con mồi’.
J’ai alors beaucoup réfléchi sur les aventures de la jungle et, à mon tour, j’ai réussi, avec un crayon de couleur, à tracer mon premier dessin. I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. J’ai montré mon chef-d’œuvre aux grandes personnes et je leur ai demandé si mon dessin leur faisait peur. I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. Tôi đưa cho các người lớn xem kiệt tác của tôi và hỏi họ bức vẽ của tôi có làm cho họ sợ không.
Elles m’ont répondu : « Pourquoi un chapeau ferait-il peur ? » But they answered: ‘Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?’ Họ trả lời: ‘Sao một cái mũ lại làm cho sợ được?’.
Mon dessin ne représentait pas un chapeau. My drawing was not a picture of a hat. Bức tranh của tôi đâu có vẽ một chiếc mũ.
Il représentait un serpent boa qui digérait un éléphant. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. Nó vẽ một con trăn đang tiêu hóa một con voi.
J’ai alors dessiné l’intérieur du serpent boa, afin que les grandes personnes puissent comprendre. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. Thế là tôi vẽ lại bên trong bụng trăn, để cho các người lớn có thể hiểu được.
Elles ont, toujours besoin d’explications. They always need to have things explained. Đối với người lớn, bao giờ cũng phải giảng.

Les grandes personnes m’ont conseillé de laisser de côté les dessins de serpents boas ouverts ou fermés, et de m’intéresser plutôt à la géographie, à l’histoire, au calcul et à la grammaire. The grown-ups’ response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. C’est ainsi que j’ai abandonné, à l’âge de six ans, une magnifique carrière de peintre. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. Như vậy đó mà vào tuổi lên sáu, tôi đã bỏ một cuộc đời họa sĩ tuyệt diệu.
J’avais été découragé par l’insuccès de mon dessin numéro i et de mon dessin numéro 2. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Tôi thất vọng vì bức vẽ số một và bức vẽ số hai của tôi không thành công.
Les grandes personnes ne comprennent jamais rien toutes seules, et c’est fatigant, pour les enfants, de toujours et toujours leur donner des explications. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them. Các người lớn không bao giờ tự mình hiểu được điều gì, và trẻ con lúc nào, lúc nào cũng phải giảng giải cho các ông, đến nhọc!
J’ai donc dû choisir un autre métier et j’ai appris à piloter des avions. So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot airplanes. Thế là tôi phải chọn một nghề khác, và tôi học lái máy bay.
J’ai volé un peu partout dans le monde. Et la géographie, c’est exact, m’a beaucoup servi. Je savais reconnaître, du premier coup d’œil, la Chine de l’Arizona. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. Trên thế giới, đâu tôi cũng từng có bay một tí. Và môn địa lí, đúng thế, có giúp cho tôi nhiều, chỉ nhìn qua, tôi biết nhận ra đây là Trung Quốc chứ không phải vùng Arizona.
C’est très utile, si l’on est égaré pendant la nuit. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable. Cái đó cần lắm, nếu ban đêm ta bị lạc.
J’ai ainsi eu, au cours de ma vie, des tas de contacts avec des tas de gens sérieux. In the course of this life I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. Như vậy đấy, trong cuộc đời tôi, tôi có hàng đống những cuộc gặp gỡ với khối người quan trọng.
J’ai beaucoup vécu chez les grandes personnes. I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. Tôi đã sống nhiều ở nhà những người lớn.
Je les ai vues de très près. I have seen them intimately, close at hand. Tôi đã nhìn thấy họ rất gần.
Ça n’a pas trop amélioré mon opinion. And that hasn’t much improved my opinion of them. Việc này vẫn chẳng làm tôi đánh giá họ khá hơn bao nhiêu.
Quand j’en rencontrais une qui me paraissait un peu lucide, je faisais l’expérience sur elle de mon dessin numéro i que j’ai toujours conservé. Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. Khi gặp một người lớn có vẻ hơi sáng suốt một chút, tôi liền đem bức vẽ số một mà tôi vẫn giữ, để thử ông ta.
Je voulais savoir si elle était vraiment compréhensive. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding.  
Mais toujours elle me répondait : But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say: Ông ta trả lời hoài:
« C’est un chapeau. » ‘That is a hat.’ ‘Đây là một cái mũ’.
Alors je ne lui parlais ni de serpents boas, ni de forêts vierges, ni d’étoiles. Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. Thế là tôi chẳng thèm nói với ông ta về rắn trăn, rừng hoang hay trăng sao gì nữa.
Je me mettais à sa portée. I would bring myself down to his level. Tôi tự hạ ngang tầm ông ta.
Je lui parlais de bridge, de golf, de politique et de cravates. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties. Tôi nói với ông ta về bài bạc, về đấu bóng, về chính trị và về cà vạt.
Et la grande personne était bien contente de connaître un homme aussi raisonnable. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man. Thế là người lớn rất lấy làm bằng lòng được gặp một người biết điều như tôi.
