Đêm nay là Vía Đức Lý Giáo Tông, tức là Anh Cả thiêng liêng của chúng ta đó vậy. Tonight is the Feast Day of the Venerable Pope Ly, who is our spiritual Elder Brother.
Đã hai (*) năm dài đăng đẳng, nhưng Bần Đạo ngó lại chẳng khác nào như giấc chiêm bao. It has been two (*) long years, but as I look back, it is like a dream.
Khi ban sơ mới khai Đạo, Đức Chí Tôn đến mở Đạo, đem lòng thương yêu vô tận của Ngài, Ngài đến chung sống cùng con cái của Ngài. In the beginning, when the Way was first opened, the Supreme Being came to open the Way, bringing His infinite love. He came to live together with His children.
Theo luân lý thường tình của ta, một ông Cha cực nhọc đi đến tìm con, bao giờ lòng thương yêu vô tận ấy cũng trên hết mọi tâm tình. According to our normal morality, when a father toils to come find his children, that infinite love is always above all other feelings.
Chính mình không có kể đứa con nào nên, đứa nào hư, đứa nào hèn, đứa nào sang, không kể gì cái đó hết thảy. He Himself did not take into account which child was good or bad, which was lowly or noble; He did not consider any of that.
Vì cớ cho nên Đức Chí Tôn mở Đạo, Ngài ôm cả con cái của Ngài vào lòng, theo thể Bần Đạo ngó thấy hiển nhiên rằng: Đức Chí Tôn không kể Nguyên Nhân, Hóa Nhân, Quỉ Nhân gì hết. For that reason, when the Supreme Being opened the Way, He embraced all of His children in His arms. From what I saw plainly, the Supreme Being did not distinguish between Original Souls, Evolved Souls, or Fallen Souls.
Bằng cớ khi nọ có một người đàn bà, Bần Đạo không nên nói tên ra làm chi, đội sớ quì mãi đến bãi đàn, tôi không biết xin điều gì, quì đến bãi đàn, đội sớ quì như vậy từ đàn này đến đàn khác, theo đuổi giỏi giắn siêng năn lắm. The proof is that one time, there was a woman—I shouldn’t mention her name—who knelt with her petition until the end of the ceremony. I do not know what she was asking for, but she knelt holding her petition like that from one ceremony to the next; she was very diligent and persistent.
Ngày nọ đến cái đàn chót Đức Chí Tôn kêu tên người đó, rồi hỏi muốn lung lắm sao con? Người kia thầm vái cái gì không biết, Đức Chí Tôn lại nói: Thôi phong con chức Giáo Hữu đó. One day, at the final ceremony, the Supreme Being called her by name and asked, “You desire it very much, do you not, my child?” The woman silently prayed for something, I don’t know what. The Supreme Being then said, “Very well, I appoint you to the rank of Priest.”
Thành thử ta ngó thấy rằng: Giá trị của chức Giáo Hữu không có gì hết, bất kỳ ai cũng cầu được, đem vô cái thể của Ổng với những phần tử vô giá trị, làm cho Đức Lý buổi nọ cầm quyền Thiêng Liêng của Đạo, Ngài khổ não không biết sao luận được. Thus we can see: The value of the rank of Priest was nothing at all; anyone could pray for it. By bringing such valueless elements into His Body, it caused the Venerable Ly, who at that time held the spiritual authority of the Way, an amount of sorrow that cannot be described.
Buổi nọ Bần Đạo không hiểu gì hết. Đức Chí Tôn đến ban sơ khi mở Đạo, Đại Từ Phụ đòi truyền Bí Pháp cho Bần Đạo đi thôi, còn về Thể Pháp thì Hội Thánh không biết gì hết. At that time, I did not understand anything. When the Supreme Being first came to open the Way, the Great and Merciful Father only wanted to transmit the Secret Dharma to me. As for the Exoteric Dharma, the Sacerdotal Council knew nothing.
Nội Bí Pháp không, Đại Từ Phụ đã truyền giáo, Ngài mở Đạo tại Từ Lâm Tự, đến ngày khai đàn Bần Đạo cười chết, cười sống, cười lộn mật, cười quên đầu quên đuôi hết ráo. With only the Secret Dharma, the Great and Merciful Father had propagated the teaching. He opened the Way at Từ Lâm Pagoda, and on the day of the first ceremony, I laughed myself to death, laughed my guts out, laughed so hard I forgot my head from my tail.
Bởi cớ cho nên quỉ lộng cho đến chừng bị rầy cam chịu, bơ bơ có biết gì đây, về Thể Pháp Bần Đạo bị chê, Đức Lý phiền biết bao nhiêu, Bần Đạo không dám mở miệng nói gì hết, lại một nỗi Phật Mẫu và Đại Từ Phụ đem quyền Chí Tôn, Bát Quái Đài duy có một Ông mà thôi, còn quyền Chí Tôn Thánh Thể của hữu hình, Ông hỏi lấy ai hiệp một mới đương đầu với Ổng, tức nhiên Hộ Pháp, Giáo Tông hiệp một cùng nhau, hai quyền ấy mới nắm quyền Chí Tôn của Ngài. Because of that, the demons played tricks until I was scolded and had to accept it, dazed and knowing nothing. For the Exoteric Dharma, I was criticized. The Venerable Ly was so displeased. I did not dare to open my mouth to say anything. And another thing: the Buddha Mother and the Great and Merciful Father brought the authority of the Supreme Being. In the Bát Quái Đài, there was only one Being, Himself. As for the authority of the Supreme Being in the visible Divine Body, He asked who would unite as one to contend with Him. That is, the Hộ Pháp and the Pope must unite as one; only then could those two powers grasp His authority as Supreme Being.
Ngẩm ra buổi nọ Đức Lý nói với Bần Đạo, theo Ngài phải hay theo Đức Chí Tôn phải. Theo Đại Từ Phụ chắc hẳn, Bần Đạo nói thật chẳng hề Bần Đạo nghe theo Đức Lý được. I reflect that at that time, the Venerable Ly said to me, was it right to follow him, or was it right to follow the Supreme Being? To follow the Great and Merciful Father was certain, so I say truthfully, I could never follow the Venerable Ly.
Thánh Thể của Đức Chí Tôn hồi buổi đó không giá trị, không trật tự, họ chia phe phân phái, họ còn phe đảng dữ lắm, mạnh đặng yếu thua, thế lực dữ lắm không có cái gì thiếu, làm cho Thánh Thể Đức Chí Tôn buổi nọ dơ bẩn làm sao đâu, không thể tưởng tượng được. The Divine Body of the Supreme Being at that time had no value, no order. They formed factions and cliques; their partisanship was very strong. The strong won, the weak lost. The power struggles were intense; nothing was lacking. It made the Divine Body of the Supreme Being at that time so sullied, it is impossible to imagine.
Đức Giáo Lý Tông hội Chư Thánh, nhưng đương đầu với Đức Chí Tôn chẳng dám vì lẽ đó họ chia phe phân phái lập đảng. The Venerable Pope Ly gathered the Saints, but dared not confront the Supreme Being directly. Because of that, they formed factions and cliques.
Ngài thấy tình cảnh như vậy Ngài mới biểu Bần Đạo xuống tại Thủ Đức, trong 7 tháng Bần Đạo chung sống cùng Ngài đặng cho Ngài truyền Thể Pháp. Seeing this situation, he then told me to go down to Thủ Đức. For 7 months I lived together with him so he could transmit the Exoteric Dharma.
Giờ phút này Bần Đạo đứng tại Tòa giảng đây tưởng tượng nhớ đến tâm tình ấy thắm thiết biết bao nhiêu, nồng nàn mà nói, không có một điều gì sơ sót, chỉ đủ mọi hành tàng, rành rẽ chi tiết hết. At this moment, standing on this pulpit, I recall that sentiment and how profound, how fervent it was. He left no detail out, explaining every action, every detail clearly.
Bần Đạo vừa biết rồi, Đức Lý liền từ chức không làm Giáo Tông của Đạo trọn 3 năm vậy. As soon as I understood, the Venerable Ly immediately resigned and did not act as Pope of the Way for a full 3 years.
Khi Bần Đạo ở Thủ Đức về, Đức Lý dắt một đàng Ngài biểu theo Ngài chỉnh đốn Hội Thánh lại, một đàng Đức Chí Tôn nói đừng nghe Lý Thái Bạch đa nghe Phạm Công Tắc! When I returned from Thủ Đức, the Venerable Ly led me on one path, telling me to follow him to reorganize the Sacerdotal Council. On the other path, the Supreme Being said, “Do not listen to Lý Thái Bạch [Ly Po], do you hear, Phạm Công Tắc!”
Một đàng kéo một đàng trì, làm cho Bần Đạo không biết đường đi chút nào, thất thơ thất thưởng, mất linh hồn, muốn nửa tỉnh nửa say, Ngài đến 11 giờ Ngài viết cho đến 4 giờ sáng, chỉ rành rẽ thế nào, nhứt là Ngài biểu Bần Đạo hiệp cùng Ngài cho có quyền Chí Tôn hữu hình tại thế này, Hiền Hữu muốn cho Đạo Cao Đài còn tồn tại, hay nghe lời Đức Chí Tôn để cho nền Đạo phải mất? One pulled one way, the other pulled back, leaving me with no idea which way to go. I was distraught, lost, half-sane and half-drunk. He would come at 11 o’clock and write until 4 o’clock in the morning, explaining clearly what to do. Most importantly, he told me to unite with him to have the authority of the visible Supreme Being on this earth, asking, “Friend, do you want Caodaism to survive, or will you listen to the Supreme Being and let the Religion be lost?”
Bần Đạo cứ nghĩ ngợi, đó rồi Đức Chí Tôn đến, thật sự Ông Già hơi buồn thật, Ngài nói Tắc, con sửa soạn đặng làm Lễ Đăng Điện cho Đức Lý Giáo Tông đa nghe. Rồi đó Ổng ở, Ổng nghe Đức Lý Giáo Tông cầm quyền. I kept pondering it. Then the Supreme Being came. Truly, the Old Man was a bit sad. He said, “Tắc, prepare to perform the Enthronement Ceremony for the Venerable Pope Ly, do you hear?” And then He stayed and listened as the Venerable Pope Ly assumed power.
Đức Lý Ngài biểu Thiên Phong Chức Sắc cả Cửu Trùng Đài, Hiệp Thiên Đài lập Cửu Trùng Thiên để Ngài đăng điện, khi Ngài đăng điện rồi, Ngài cầm cây viết Ngài viết Bài Diễn Văn đăng điện cho tới tận thế sẽ không có vị Giáo Tông nào làm một Bài Diễn Văn hay như vậy. The Venerable Ly ordered the Divinely Ordained Dignitaries of both the Nine Spheres Palace and the Heavenly Union Palace to construct a Nine-Levelled Heaven for his enthronement. When he was enthroned, he took up the pen and wrote his Enthronement Address. Until the end of the world, no Pope will ever deliver an address as fine as that.
Bài Diễn Văn của Ngài vạch rõ tinh thần, con đường hay ho làm sao, nhứt là trong Bài Diễn Văn đó cho cả Hội Thánh hay rằng: Kể từ khi Ngài cầm quyền Giáo Tông đây, các người ấy đừng ỷ công khi lịnh, Ngài chẳng hề tha thứ bao giờ, Ngài nói một đàng về hữu hình, chính mình Bần Đạo chưa thấy Ngài làm gì được về vô hình Ngài trừng thanh bí mật quyền linh không thể tưởng tượng. His address clearly delineated the spirit, how wonderful the path was. Most importantly, in that address, he let the entire Sacerdotal Council know that from the time he took power as Pope, they should not presume on their merits and disregard orders. He would never forgive it. He spoke of one path for the visible realm, and while I myself have not seen him do anything, in the invisible realm his punishments with secret, divine power are unimaginable.
Khéo là cái làm Ngài không lợi dụng, chính mình Ngài dùng quyền hành Thiêng Liêng trừng thanh độc lập mà thôi. Duy có Ngài làm, Bần Đạo không biết, chỉ có cười một điều cả con cái Đức Chí Tôn không biết lựa người đặng bợ đít, đêm nay đi cúng thưa thớt, nhè Đấng oai quyền sang cả kể từ mực thước nhỏ nhen nhứt. The clever thing is that he did not abuse his power; he himself only used divine authority for independent purges. Only he did it; I did not know. I could only laugh at one thing: the children of the Supreme Being don’t know who to suck up to. Tonight, the attendance at the ceremony is sparse. He is a Being of awesome power and grandeur, right down to the smallest detail.
Trên đường lập thân hành Đạo, có Đấng bảo vệ mình mà không biết bợ đỡ rồi làm sao nên. Bần Đạo xin nhắn lại với họ điều ấy. On the path of establishing oneself and practicing the Way, if you have a Being to protect you and you don’t know how to curry favor, how will you ever succeed? I would like to pass on that message to them.
