Bần Đạo giảng phải lập thân danh thể nào, và căn bản nào? I preach on how to establish one’s reputation, and on what basis?
Sanh nơi thế kỷ 20 này, cái phương sống của con người là tranh đấu cố gắng đem cả trí não khôn ngoan đặng bảo vệ sống còn của mình. Being born in this 20th century, the way of human life is to struggle, striving to use all one’s wisdom and intellect to protect one’s survival.
Bậc hiền triết thường nói: “Đã sanh ra đứng trong Trời Đất, Phải có danh gì với núi sông”. The sages often said: “Born to stand between Heaven and Earth, One must leave a name with the mountains and rivers.”
Ta là một phần tử trong khối sinh lực của toàn thể chúng sinh. Ta có phận sự phải bảo vệ cái sống ấy. We are a component of the vital force of all sentient beings. We have a duty to protect that life.
Tiên Nho của chúng ta để lại thuyết: “Tu thân, Tề gia, Trị quốc, Bình thiên hạ“. Our ancient Confucian sages left behind the doctrine: “Cultivate the self, regulate the family, govern the state, bring peace to the world.”
Tu thân là gì? Là trau giồi mình, biết mình, biết người biết vạn vật đặng định phận của mình. What is “Cultivating the self“? It is polishing oneself, knowing oneself, knowing others, and knowing all things to determine one’s duty.
Căn bản là tạo tâm đức của ta và dùng cái tình ái của ta cho có khuôn khổ, có niêm luật. The essential thing is to create our heart of virtue and use our love within a framework, with rules and discipline.
Muốn định phận của mình, muốn tạo công danh của mình phải do căn bản tình đức. To determine our destiny, to create our fame and merit, it must be based on the foundation of love and virtue.
Dầu cho tên Đạo Chích kia nó là kẻ cướp, mà nó chưa hề dám từ bỏ Tam Cang Ngũ Thường của nó. Even the notorious Robber Zhi (Đạo Chích), a bandit, never dared to abandon his own version of the Three Bonds and Five Constant Virtues.
Kẻ cướp muốn làm anh chị thiên hạ nó muốn mượn màu tình đức ấy, nhơn nghĩa ấy cho tới tận cùng. Robbers, if they want to be leaders in the world, they must borrow the color of that love and virtue, that benevolence and righteousness to the utmost.
Hễ có tình đức chắc chắn, thì chẳng cần tìm công danh cũng tự nhiên đến. Whenever there is solid love and virtue, there is no need to seek fame and merit; they will come naturally.
Thầy Nguyễn Hiến trả lời: “Kẻ biết Đạo dù nghèo cũng không nghèo… tôi chỉ là kẻ không mồ, chớ không phải kẻ bịnh”. Master Yuan Xian (Nguyễn Hiến) replied: “He who knows the Way, though poor, is not poor… I am merely without emolument, not sick.”
Vua Nghiêu muốn nhường ngôi cho Hứa Do là người có tài đức. King Yao wished to cede the throne to Xu You (Hứa Do), a man of talent and virtue.
Hứa Do đi ngang qua nguồn nước mới lum khum xuống rửa tai cho hết vấn vít vì nghe nói muốn làm vua. Xu You passed by a stream and bent down to wash his ears to cleanse them of the defilement of hearing about being king.
Sào Phủ dắt trâu đi lên trên dòng nước cho uống vì sợ nước rửa tai trôi ra trâu uống nhầm. Chao Fu led his buffalo upstream to drink, fearing the water from the washed ears would flow down and the buffalo would drink it.
Nguyễn Huệ, Nguyễn Nhạc lợi dụng tình đức đặng lập thân danh, nhưng mưu kế xảo quyệt chẳng hề bền bỉ. Nguyễn Huệ and Nguyễn Nhạc exploited love and virtue to establish a reputation, but cunning schemes never endure.
Lưu Bang lấy tình đức làm căn bản lập Hớn thất giang san được 800 năm. Liu Bang took love and virtue as the foundation to establish the Han dynasty for 800 years.
Tần Thủy Hoàng đào tạo nên bởi hung tàn bạo ngược, chỉ bền có ba đời. Qin Shi Huang was created by cruelty and tyranny, lasting only three generations.
Cơ nghiệp của Napoléon 1er cũng như giọt sương trên ngọn cỏ chẳng hề khi nào bền vững được. The enterprise of Napoleon I was like a dewdrop on a blade of grass; it could never endure.
Đứng trong cửa Đạo nương tình đức lập thân danh. Standing within the gate of the Way, rely on love and virtue to establish your reputation.
Do căn bản tình đức ấy chẳng hề khi nào hư. Based on that foundation of love and virtue, you can never fail.
