Trước khi Bần Đạo để lời, Bần Đạo xin nghiêng mình cám ơn toàn cả thảy đồng bào đôi bên niệm tình của Quân Đội và của Đạo đến dự lễ đông đảo và long trọng làm cho rỡ ràng thêm vẻ Đạo, Bần Đạo xin cúi mình cám ơn toàn thể. Before I speak, I wish to bow my head and thank all compatriots from both sides who, out of affection for the Army and for the Way, have attended this ceremony in such great and solemn numbers, adding to the glory of the Way. I humbly bow and thank you all.
Thưa cùng toàn thể đồng bào Bần Đạo xin để lời cùng các Ngài trước vận mạng đương nhiên của Tổ Quốc nòi giống tới một giai đoạn yếu trọng, nếu không nói đã đến một giai đoạn khó khăn đặng định vận mạng tương lai của nó. To all compatriots, I wish to speak to you. Before the present destiny of our Fatherland, our race has reached a very critical stage; if not to say, it has reached a difficult period where its future destiny will be decided.
Nhứt là Bần Đạo xin để lời riêng biệt cùng các nhà văn sĩ cùng các sử gia, trên chín năm tranh đấu hôm nay cái phận sự ấy yếu trọng cho các Ngài hơn hết, bởi nó đến giai đoạn chúng ta phải tranh đấu về trí thức tinh thần, nếu không nói ra rằng: Ta vẫn tiếp tục đương tranh đấu về tâm lý. I would especially like to address the writers and historians. After more than nine years of struggle, this duty is now more important for you than for anyone else, because it has reached a stage where we must contend with our intellect and spirit—if not to put it more plainly: we are still engaged in a psychological struggle.
Tưởng khi trên chín năm quốc cường thâu hồi độc lập cho Tổ quốc giang san các Ngài có sẵn trong tay một sử liệu có thế một ngày kia ngòi bút quí báu của các Ngài lưu lại cho hậu tấn một kiểu vở, một khuôn mẫu y theo tinh thần cố hữu của Tổ Phụ đã để lại. I believe that after more than nine years of indomitable struggle to reclaim independence for our Fatherland, you already hold in your hands a historical record. One day, your precious pens will be able to leave for posterity a model, a standard, that follows the traditional spirit bequeathed by our ancestors.
Cái chí quật cường 80 năm đô hộ khiến cho đồng bào chúng ta muốn giải thoát thâu hồi độc lập và Hoàng đồ của Tổ Phụ lại. The indomitable will, after 80 years of foreign domination, has driven our people to seek liberation, to reclaim independence and the Imperial Domain of our Forefathers.
Luật Thiên Điều dưới thế nầy chẳng đều chi mà ta xin đặng, ta chỉ phải mua phải chuộc với một giá cho đồng giá trị với vật mà ta muốn thâu hoạch. The Heavenly Law in this world dictates that nothing can be had by asking; we must buy it, redeem it, at a price equal to the value of the thing we wish to obtain.
Nhưng ôi thôi! Vật của toàn quốc dân đồng bào muốn thâu hoạch ấy, vật đó quí giá không tưởng tượng cho nên phải trả một giá rất mắc là cái giá xương máu trên chín năm tranh đấu. But alas! The thing that all our people wish to obtain, that thing is of a price beyond imagination, so it must be paid for at a very high cost: the price of flesh and blood over more than nine years of struggle.
Có lẽ trong khi rảnh ấy các Ngài cũng để dấu hỏi ấy (?) Trường hợp đó thử nghĩ những kẻ trí thức tinh thần phải đi đường lối nào? Phải dùng giải pháp nào? Perhaps in your spare time, you also ask this question. In that situation, consider which path all the spiritual intellectuals must take. What solution should be used?
Nhứt là của Bần Đạo sau 5 năm đồ lưu trở về nước năm 1946 cả cái tình trạng của nước nhà các Ngài cũng hiểu thấu. Especially in my own situation, returning to the country after five years of exile. In 1946, you all understood the situation of our country.
Bần Đạo xin thành thật buổi nọ Bần Đạo đã bí lối không ngõ thoát, một đàng thì Việt Minh lợi dụng tinh thần ái quốc của toàn thể quốc dân đồng bào chỉ hướng vô một điều là lập trường cứu quốc. I must confess that at that time, I was at a loss, with no way out. On one hand, the Việt Minh were exploiting the patriotic spirit of all our countrymen, directing it solely toward the cause of national salvation.
Hại nổi! Họ phải xu hướng theo hai chí hướng của hai khối nhứt là họ vẫn thấy khối Cộng Sản lầm lạc, là nương nơi khối ấy mà họ định mạng tương lai nước nhà chủng tộc là cái lầm nhứt hết. The trouble was! They had to incline toward the ideologies of two blocs, especially as they saw the Communist bloc, which they mistakenly relied on to determine the future destiny of the country and the race. That was the greatest mistake of all.
Ngó ngọn cờ độc lập mà vẫn lệ thuộc như xưa, thì làm thế nào tạo hạnh phúc giống nòi đặng! To look upon the flag of independence and still be in servitude, just as before—how could that bring happiness to the race?
Hại nổi! Khi về nước bên nầy gành giựt cả quần chúng, thì bên kia cũng giành giựt cả quần chúng, bên nầy Việt Minh, bên kia Pháp, khối Quốc Gia hai tình thế rất nguy hiểm với hai lằng tên mũi đạn. The trouble was, when I returned, this side was competing for the masses, and the other side was also competing for the masses; on one side, the Việt Minh, on the other, the French. The Nationalist bloc was in two extremely dangerous situations, between two lines of fire.
Thử như thế đồng bào mới chỉ con đường nào cho Bần Đạo đi mà chớ, có một con đường duy nhứt là con đường có của chúng ta mà Tổ phụ chúng ta để lại. In such a situation, which path could you have shown me to take? There was only one path, the path that we already had, left to us by our Forefathers.
Con đường đã có trên 4.000 năm lập quốc và 4.000 năm văn hiến. The path that has existed for over 4,000 years of nation-building and 4,000 years of civilization.
Là con đường duy nhất là Bần Đạo phải đi, mà đi con đường ấy, ôi! không biết bao nhiêu đau khổ, đã hy sinh cái khối xương máu của chiến sĩ Cao Đài làm thành, làm lũy đặng bảo vệ sự sống của nòi giống dưới ngọn cờ “Bảo Sanh Nhơn Nghĩa Đại Đồng“. Was the only path I could take. And that path, oh! how much pain it brought. It required the sacrifice of the flesh and blood of the Cao Đài Soldiers, who formed a rampart, a fortress, to protect the survival of the race under the banner of “Protection of Life, Righteousness, and Great Unity.”
Có một phen Bần Đạo tuyên bố Quân Đội Cao Đài xuất hiện ra đặng làm tấm bình phong chịu chết cho giống nòi khỏi chết. There was a time when I declared, “The Cao Đài Army has emerged to be a screen, to die so that the race might not die.”
Các con Chiến Sĩ Cao Đài từ Thượng Hạ Sĩ Quan dĩ chí đến Binh sĩ, một phen nữa Thầy xô các con ra hy sinh cứu nòi giống và Tổ Quốc các con. My children, Soldiers of Cao Đài, from the officers to the enlisted men, once again I push you to sacrifice yourselves to save your race and Fatherland.
Tương lai vận mạng như vầy các con tiếp tục tranh đấu cho kỳ được đặng thâu độc lập cho giống nòi cho Tổ Quốc các con. With the future destiny like this, you must continue the struggle until you have achieved independence for your race and Fatherland.
