1. Tâm Chúng Sanh 1. The Mind of Sentient Beings
Vọng tưởng không có làm chủ. Phật (mới là bậc) làm chủ (tâm). Delusive thoughts are not the master. The Buddha is.
Tu làm sao mà về già càng tu càng không quái ngại. You must practice in such a way that the older you grow, the more you are free from hindrances.
Hễ muốn vãng sanh thì chỉ nhắm mắt như ngủ là đi ngay. When the time comes to attain rebirth in the Pure Land, you should be able to depart simply by closing your eyes, as if falling asleep.
Chúng ta đêm nào ngủ cũng tựa như cái xác chết, chẳng biết chuyện gì xảy ra xung quanh. Every night when we sleep, we are like a corpse, unaware of anything happening around us.
Sáng tỉnh dậy, mở mắt ra là lập tức bắt đầu tiến trình chấp trước; nhìn cái này là ‘của ta’, thấy cái kia là ‘của mình’… But the moment we awaken and open our eyes, the process of clinging begins anew. We see this and think, “This is mine”; we see that and think, “This belongs to me.”
Các bạn không thể thấy được những thứ vô hình hài, vô sắc tướng; do đó không có hứng thú, không thích chúng. You cannot see that which is formless and intangible; thus, you have no interest in it.
Vì vậy, các bạn chỉ ham thích truy cầu thứ có sắc tướng mà thôi. That is why you only delight in pursuing things that have form.
Lúc cha mẹ sinh bạn, bạn nào hay biết gì. When your parents gave birth to you, you were not aware of anything.
Khi lớn lên một chút thì bạn bị ‘dính bụi trần’, chấp chặt quan niệm về cái ngã liền. As you grew, you were “stained by worldly dust” and immediately clung to the notion of a self.
Hễ chấp trước quan niệm về cái ngã thì sẽ có phiền não ngay. Once there is attachment to the idea of a self, afflictions arise.
Song le, ‘Xưa nay không một vật, Làm sao dính bụi trần?’ And yet, Fundamentally, not a single thing exists, So where can dust alight?
Những vị ở cõi trời thấy chúng ta giống hệt như mấy con giòi đen, thứ giòi ở trong cầu tiêu. Beings in the celestial realms see us as nothing more than black maggots in a latrine.
Ðức Phật A-Di-Ðà phát 48 đại nguyện là để tiếp độ mình tới Thế-giới Cực-Lạc; song mình cứ một mực tham luyến cõi Ta-Bà, cho khổ là vui, hệt như mấy con giòi đen (cho cầu tiêu ô uế là nơi đầy thú vị)! Amitabha Buddha made 48 great vows to guide us to the Western Paradise, yet we stubbornly cling to this Saha world, mistaking suffering for joy—just like maggots that find a filthy latrine to be a most fascinating place!
Mình thấy cầu tiêu hôi hám không chịu nổi nên muốn vớt mấy con giòi ra, thả chúng vào chỗ nước trong trẻo. We see the latrine as unbearably foul and want to scoop the maggots out, placing them in clear water.
Song lũ giòi ấy lại tham luyến cái cầu tiêu ô uế hơn mọi thứ, thà chết chứ không chịu đi đâu cả! But those maggots cherish the filthy latrine above all else; they would rather die than leave!
Con người ta học làm điều xấu thì rất dễ; còn học làm chuyện tốt thì khó lắm! It is very easy for people to learn to do evil, but exceedingly difficult to learn to do good.
Bốn loài chúng sanh hễ ăn no rồi thì ngủ, tâm lúc nào cũng tán loạn. Sentient beings of all kinds, once their bellies are full, simply sleep. Their minds are in a constant state of distraction.
2. Thói Quen, Tập Khí 2. Habits and Ingrained Tendencies
Kẻ thẳng thắn dễ khai mở trí huệ. A straightforward person easily unlocks their innate wisdom.
Cá tánh của mỗi người rất quan trọng. A person’s character is paramount.
Tánh tình tốt, hiền hòa, thì đi tới đâu cũng hòa đồng được với mọi người, tùy thuận được người khác. If your nature is good and gentle, you can harmonize with everyone, wherever you go, and accord with others.
Song tùy thuận cũng có hạn lượng; bởi vì đối với kẻ làm việc xấu thì mình không thể tùy thuận làm theo, mà phải kiên định lập trường, nguyên tắc hành động. However, this adaptability has its limits; you cannot accord with those who do evil. In such cases, you must remain firm in your principles of conduct.
Bản thân con người thì không xấu ác gì; chỉ có thói quen, tập khí là hư xấu. People themselves are not inherently evil; it is only their habits and ingrained tendencies that are unwholesome.
Ai cũng có thói hư tật xấu, chỉ khác là kẻ ít người nhiều mà thôi. Everyone has flawed habits; the only difference lies in their severity.
Chỉ cần bạn hướng tâm tu Ðạo là đủ. It is enough that you resolve to cultivate the Way.
Hễ bạn có thể tha thứ cho ai, thì hãy tha thứ ngay. Whenever you can forgive someone, do so.
Ðừng bao giờ cho người ta là hư xấu. Never condemn others as wicked.
Anh A có thói hút thuốc, đi đâu cũng phì phà khói thuốc. Man A has a habit of smoking, puffing smoke wherever he goes.
Anh B thì có thói đa nghi, lúc nào cũng nghi ngờ này nọ. Man B has a suspicious nature, constantly doubting everything.
Có lần A hút trước mặt B. One day, A smokes in front of B.
Anh B tức giận, nghi rằng anh A khinh khi mình; thế là hai đàng sanh ra cãi vã, xung đột. B becomes angry, suspecting A is showing him disrespect. An argument erupts.
May có anh C biết thói quen của hai người, nên đến giải hòa; khiến đôi bên từ đó sửa đổi, bỏ thói hút thuốc, bỏ tánh đa nghi. Fortunately, C, who knows both their habits, intervenes and reconciles them. From that day on, they both mend their ways, one quitting smoking, the other abandoning his suspicious mind.
Bởi vậy, thói xấu mà mình không tự nhận biết để sửa đổi, thì chỉ gây phiền não cho kẻ khác. Therefore, if we do not recognize and correct our own bad habits, we will only cause affliction for others.
Tâm đa nghi chỉ hại mình, chướng ngại việc tu. A suspicious mind harms only yourself and obstructs your practice.
Khi thấy ai bất hòa, xung khắc, thì bạn chớ đổ dầu vào lửa khiến sự tình thêm rắc rối; mà phải luôn tìm cách giải hòa! When you see others in conflict, never add fuel to the fire, making matters worse. You must always find a way to help them reconcile.
Có kẻ hay phê bình, chỉ trích, hoặc nói xấu người khác. Some people are always criticizing, finding fault, or speaking ill of others.
Thật ra, y không tự hiểu việc làm của y là sai, mà y cũng không cố ý muốn chỉ trích, nói này nói nọ. In truth, they neither understand that what they are doing is wrong nor do they have a conscious intent to criticize.
Chẳng qua là do thói quen xấu mà y đã huân tập từ vô lượng kiếp về trước thúc đẩy, khiến y bất giác làm vậy. They are simply compelled by unwholesome tendencies cultivated over countless past lifetimes, causing them to act that way unconsciously.
Trước kia có một người, khi nói chuyện với ai anh ta cũng luôn nhìn ngang liếc dọc, làm ra vẻ thần bí; khiến người khác khi nhìn anh ta thì họ có cảm giác như anh ta đang nói xấu ai đó. There was once a man who, whenever he spoke, would furtively glance from side to side, creating a mysterious air. This made others feel as though he were speaking ill of someone.
Kỳ thực, nào phải vậy! Ðó chỉ là thói quen xấu mà thôi. In reality, it was not the case at all! It was merely a bad habit.
Do đó, làm việc gì bạn cũng phải tự tại, tự nhiên; nếu không, bạn có thể rước đủ thứ phiền hà vô ích vào thân! Therefore, in all that you do, you must be natural and at ease. Otherwise, you may bring all sorts of needless trouble upon yourself.
3. Danh lợi và Chậm Chạp 3. Trials and Spiritual Aptitude
Mỗi người, ai cũng đầy một bụng phiền não. Every single person carries a bellyful of afflictions.
Xưa kia ở Ðại Lục (Trung Hoa), hễ người nào càng cố công tu hành, càng có căn cơ, thì càng bị thử thách nhiều lắm. In the past, on the mainland of China, the more diligently a person practiced and the greater their spiritual capacity, the more severely they would be tested.
Có kẻ cố ý dùng đủ thái độ vô lý lại chèn ép, khiêu khích người ấy. Someone might deliberately use unreasonable behavior to oppress or provoke them.
Hoặc có kẻ thấy người ấy gần hoàn thành một công trình gì đó thì tới phá hoại cho sụp đổ tan tành. Or, just as they were about to complete a great project, another might come and destroy it completely.
Tuy nhiên, phải xem căn cơ của người ấy thế nào rồi mới thử thách đặng. However, one had to gauge a person’s spiritual capacity before testing them.
Nếu thử thách kẻ không có căn cơ, bản lãnh, thì y sẽ sanh phiền não. If you test someone without that capacity, they will only become consumed by affliction.
Ở Ðài Loan thì khó mà thử thách ai. Here in Taiwan, it is difficult to test anyone in this manner.
Bởi vì hầu hết các Ni-cô đều xuất thân từ mái nhà ấm cúng của cha mẹ, quen thói nhõng nhẽo; cho nên đối với họ, chỉ phải dùng toàn phương pháp thế gian mà thôi. Most of the nuns come from comfortable homes, accustomed to being pampered. Therefore, with them, you can often only use conventional, worldly methods.
Ðời xưa, có vị Sư Phụ muốn thử coi công phu tu hành của đệ tử. Ngài bảo đệ tử mang ngược dép lại. In ancient times, a Master wished to test the cultivation of his disciples. He instructed them to wear their sandals backward.
Kẻ có căn cơ, trí huệ, liền quỳ xuống; thì Sư-Phụ từ bi chỉ dạy. A disciple with aptitude and wisdom immediately knelt down, ready to receive the Master’s compassionate teaching.
Kẻ ngu si thì quả thật mang dép ngược lại ngay. The foolish disciple actually put their sandals on backward.
Còn kẻ không có căn cơ thì lập tức nổi đóa, sinh phiền não; cho rằng Sư-Phụ sai lầm, cố ý làm cho y phiền não. And the disciple with no aptitude immediately flared up in anger, believing the Master was mistaken and was deliberately trying to vex them.
Khi kẻ có căn cơ nghe bạn nói về y (phê bình, chỉ trích, mắng nhiếc), thì y biết rằng đó chính là lời Sư-Phụ y đang dạy dỗ; do đó, y biết cầu sám hối. When a person of high spiritual capacity hears you speak of them—whether criticizing, censuring, or scolding—they recognize it as their Master’s teaching and therefore know to repent.
Khi kẻ thiếu căn cơ nghe bạn nói về y, thì y lập tức đấu khẩu, hỏi gặng vì sao bạn dám nói động đến y; và rồi y sanh lòng tức tối, phiền não. When a person of low spiritual capacity hears you speak of them, they immediately argue back, demanding to know why you dare to speak to them in such a way. Then, they become resentful and afflicted.
Y sẽ nghĩ tới mái nhà ấm cúng của cha mẹ y, nào là được ăn ngon, mặc đẹp, lại được đi học…, những tấn tuồng cũ kỹ khiến y sẽ đọa lạc mãi trong luân hồi. They will think back to their cozy home with their parents, the good food, the nice clothes, their education—all the old dramas that ensure they will remain mired in the cycle of rebirth.
Hễ việc gì tới mà mình tỉnh ngộ, thấu triệt, thì mình là kẻ có căn cơ. If you can awaken to the truth of any situation that befalls you and understand it thoroughly, you are a person of high capacity.
Kẻ không có căn cơ thì việc gì (trái ý muốn, trái sở thích) đến với y, y đều sanh phiền não, bực bội. A person of low capacity reacts to every undesirable or unpleasant event with agitation and affliction.
Kẻ không có căn cơ thì phiền não cả đống. A person without spiritual capacity has heaps of afflictions.
Dù bạn cố ý giải thích, y cũng không thể hiểu. Even if you try to explain, they will be unable to understand.
Không trừ phiền não thì chánh niệm (sự suy tư đúng với chân lý hay Phật lý) không thể hiện tiền. Without eliminating afflictions, Right Mindfulness cannot manifest.
