| 1. Mind precedes all knowables, | 1. Ý dẫn đầu các pháp, |
| mind's their chief, mind-made are they. | Ý làm chủ, ý tạo; |
| If with a corrupted mind | Nếu với ý ô nhiễm, |
| one should either speak or act | Nói lên hay hành động, |
| dukkha follows caused by that, | Khổ não bước theo sau, |
| as does the wheel the ox's hoof. | Như xe, chân vật kéo. |
| 2. Mind precedes all knowables, | 2. Ý dẫn đầu các pháp, |
| mind's their chief, mind-made are they. | Ý làm chủ, ý tạo; |
| If with a clear, and confident mind | Nếu với ý thanh tịnh, |
| one should speak and act | Nói lên hay hành động, |
| happiness follows caused by that, | An lạc bước theo sau, |
| as one's shadow ne'er departing. | Như bóng, không rời hình. |
| 3. Who bears within them enmity: | 3. Nó mắng tôi, đánh tôi, |
| "He has abused and beaten me, | Nó thắng tôi, cướp tôi |
| defeated me and plundered me", | Ai ôm hiềm hận ấy, |
| hate is not allayed for them. | Hận thù không thể nguôi. |
| 4. Who bears within no enmity: | 4. Nó mắng tôi, đánh tôi, |
| "He has abused and beaten me, | Nó thắng tôi, cướp tôi |
| defeated me and plundered me", | Không ôm hiềm hận ấy, |
| hate is quite allayed for them. | Hận thù được tự nguôi. |
| 5. Never here by enmity | 5. Với hận diệt hận thù, |
| are those with enmity allayed, | Ðời này không có được. |
| they are allayed by amity, | Không hận diệt hận thù, |
| this is the timeless Truth. | Là định luật ngàn thu. |
| 6. Still others do not understand | 6. Và người khác không biết, |
| that we must perish in this world, | Chúng ta đây bị hại. |
| those who understand this, | Chỗ ấy, ai hiểu được |
| their quarrels are allayed. | Tranh luận được lắng êm. |
| 7. One who beauty contemplates, | 7. Ai sống nhìn tịnh tướng, |
| whose faculties are unrestrained, | Không hộ trì các căn, |
| in food no moderation knows, | ăn uống thiếu tiết độ, |
| is languid, who is indolent: | biếng nhác, chẳng tinh cần. |
| that one does Mara overthrow | Ma uy hiếp kẻ ấy, |
| as wind a tree of little strength. | như cây yếu trước gió. |
| 8. One who foulness contemplates, | 8. Ai sống quán bất tịnh, |
| whose faculties are well-restrained, | Khéo hộ trì các căn, |
| in food does moderation know, | ăn uống có tiết độ, |
| is full of faith, who's diligent: | Có lòng tin, tinh cần, |
| that one no Mara overthrows, | Ma không uy hiếp được, |
| as wind does not a rocky mount. | Như núi đá, trước gió. |
| 9. One who wears the stainless robe | 9. Ai mặc áo cà sa. [1] |
| who's yet not free from stain, | tâm chưa rời uế trược, |
| without restraint and truthfulness | không tự chế, không thực, |
| for the stainless robe's unfit. | không xứng áo cà sa |
| 10. But one who is self-cleansed of stain, | 10. Ai rời bỏ uế trược, |
| in moral conduct firmly set, | giới luật khéo nghiêm trì, |
| having restraint and truthfulness | tự chế, sống chơn thực, |
| is fit for the stainless robe. | thật xứng áo cà sa. |
| 11. Conceiving the real in unreality | 11. Không chân, tướng chân thật, |
| while seeing unreal the truly real, | chân thật, thấy không chân: |
| roaming fields of thoughts ill-formed: | chúng không đạt chân thật, |
| never they at the real arrive. | do tà tư, tà hạnh. |
| 12. That which is real they know as real, | 12. Chân thật, biết chân thật, |
| that unreal, to be unreal; | Không chân, biết không chân: |
| roaming fields of thought well-formed | chúng đạt được chân thật, |
| they at the real arrive. | do chánh tư, chánh hạnh. |
| 13. Even as the rain does penetrate | 13. Như mái nhà vụng lợp, |
| a house that's badly thatched, | Mưa liền xâm nhập vào. |
| likewise lust does penetrate | Cũng vậy tâm không tu, |
| the mind uncultivated. | Tham dục liền xâm nhập. |
| 14. As rain does never penetrate | 14. Như ngôi nhà khéo lợp, |
| a house that is well-thatched, | Mưa không xâm nhập vào. |
| so lust does never penetrate | Cũng vậy tâm khéo tu, |
| the mind well cultivated. | Tham dục không xâm nhập. |
| 15. Here one grieves, one grieves hereafter, | 15. Nay sầu, đời sau sầu, |
| in both ways does the evil-doer grieve; | Kẻ ác, hai đời sầu; |
| one grieves and is afflicted, | Nó sầu, nó ưu não, |
| one's own base kammas seeing. | Thấy nghiệp uế mình làm. |
| 16. Here one joys, one joys hereafter, | 16. Nay vui,đời sau vui, |
| in both ways does the merit-maker joy; | Làm phước, hai đời vui, |
| one joys and one rejoices, | Nó vui, nó an vui, |
| one's own pure kammas seeing. | Thấy nghiệp tịnh mình làm. |
| 17. Here one burns, one burns hereafter, | 17. Nay than, đời sau than, |
| in both ways does the evil-doer burn; | Kẻ ác, hai đời than, |
| evil I've done, remorsefully one burns, | Nó than: 'Ta làm ác' |
| and more one burns passed to realms of woe. | Ðọa cõi dữ, than hơn. |
| 18. Here one's glad, one's glad hereafter, | 18. Nay sướng, đời sau sướng, |
| in both ways is the merit-maker glad; | Làm phước, hai đời sướng. |
| "Merit I've made", serenely one is glad, | Nó sướng: 'Ta làm thiện', |
| and more one's glad passed to blissful states. | Sanh cõi lành, sướng hơn. |
| 19. Though many sacred texts he chants | 19. Nếu người nói nhiều kinh, |
| the heedless man's no practicer, | Không hành trì, phóng dật; |
| as cowherd counting other's kine | Như kẻ chăn bò người, |
| in samanaship he has no share. | Không phần Sa môn hạnh. |
| 20. Though few of the sacred texts he chants | 20. Dầu nói ít kinh điển, |
| in Dhamma does his practice run, | Nhưng hành pháp, tùy pháp, |
| clear of delusion, lust and hate, | Từ bỏ tham, sân, si, |
| wisdom perfected, with heart well-freed, | Tĩnh giác, tâm giải thoát, |
| not clinging to this or other world, | Không chấp thủ hai đời, |
| in samanaship he has a share | Dự phần Sa môn hạnh. |
