| 235. Now a withered leaf you are | 235. Ngươi nay giống lá héo, |
| and now Death's men draw near, | Diêm sứ đang chờ ngươi, |
| now you stand at the parting gates | Ngươi đứng trước cửa chết, |
| but waybread you have none. | Ðường trường thiếu tư lương. |
| 236. Make an island of yourself, | 236. Hãy tự làm hòn đảo, |
| quickly strive and wise become, | Tinh cần gấp, sáng suốt. |
| freed from stain and passionless | Trừ cấu uế, thanh tịnh, |
| to go to the pure Abodes. | Ðến Thánh địa chư Thiên. |
| 237. Even now the end draws near, | 237. Ðời ngươi nay sắp tàn, |
| to the presence of death you've fared. | Tiến gần đến Diêm Vương. |
| Along the path's no place for rest | Giữa đường không nơi nghỉ, |
| and waybread you have none. | Ðường trường thiếu tư lương. |
| 238. Make an island of yourself, | 238. Hãy tự làm hòn đảo, |
| quickly strive and wise become, | Tinh cần gấp, sáng suốt. |
| freed from stain and passionless | Trừ cấu uế, thanh tịnh, |
| you'll not return, take flesh, decay. | Chẳng trở lại sanh già. |
| 239. Little by little, time after time, | 239. Bậc trí theo tuần tự. |
| successively then let the sage | Từng sát na trừ dần |
| blow away all blemishes | Như thợ vàng lọc bụi |
| just as a smith with silver. | Trừ cấu uế nơi mình. |
| 240. As rust arisen out of iron | 240. Như sét từ sắt sinh, |
| itself that iron eats away, | Sắt sanh lại ăn sắt, |
| so kammas done beyond what's wise | Cũng vậy, quá lợi dưỡng |
| lead to a state of woe. | Tự nghiệp dẫn cõi ác. |
| 241. For oral tradition, non-recitation, | 241. Không tụng làm nhớp kinh, |
| in household life, non-exertion, | Không đứng dậy, bẩn nhà, |
| the fair of form when slovenly, | Biếng nhác làm nhơ sắc, |
| a sentry's sloth: all blemishes. | Phóng dật uế người canh. |
| 242. In woman, conduct culpable, | 242. Tà hạnh nhơ đàn bà, |
| with givers, avariciousness, | Xan tham nhớp kẻ thí, |
| all blemishes these evil things | Ác pháp là vết nhơ, |
| in this world or the next. | Ðời này và đời sau. |
| 243. More basic than these blemishes | 243. Trong hàng cầu uế ấy, |
| is ignorance, the worst of all. | Vô minh, nhơ tối thượng, |
| Abandoning this blemish then, | Ðoạn nhơ ấy, tỷ kheo, |
| be free of blemish, monks! | Thành bậc không uế nhiễm. |
| 244. Easy the life for a shameless one | 244. Dễ thay, sống không hổ |
| who bold and forward as a crow, | Sống lỗ mãng như quạ, |
| is slanderer and braggart too: | Sống công kích huyênh hoang, |
| this one's completely stained. | Sống liều lĩnh, nhiễm ô. |
| 245. But hard the life of a modest one | 245. Khó thay, sống xấu hổ, |
| who always seeks for purity, | Thường thường cầu thanh tịnh. |
| who's cheerful though no braggart, | Sống vô tư, khiêm tốn, |
| clean-living and discerning. | Trong sạch và sáng suốt. |
| 246. In the world who life destroys, | 246. Ai ở đời sát sinh, |
| who words of falsity speaks, | Nói láo không chân thật, |
| who takes what is not freely given | Ở đời lấy không cho, |
| or to another's partner goes. | Qua lại với vợ người. |
| 247. Or has distilled, fermented drinks: | 247. Uống rượu men, rượu nấu, |
| Who with abandon follows these | Người sống đam mê vậy, |
| extirpates the root of self | Chính ngay tại đời này, |
| even here in this very world. | Tự đào bới gốc mình. |
| 248. Therefore friend remember this; | 248. Vậy người, hãy nên biết, |
| Hard to restrain are evil acts, | Không chế ngự là ác, |
| don't let greed and wickedness | Chớ để tham phi pháp, |
| down drag you long in dukkha. | Làm người đau khổ dài. |
| 249. People give as they have faith, | 249. Do tín tâm, hỷ tâm |
| as they are bright with joyfulness. | Loài người mới bố thí. |
| Who's troubled over gifts received, | Ở đây ai bất mãn |
| the food and drink that others get, | Người khác được ăn uống, |
| neither in daytime nor by night | Người ấy ngày hoặc đêm, |
| will come to a collected mind. | Không đạt được tâm tịnh? |
| 250. But who has severed envy's mind, | 250. Ai cắt được, phá được, |
| uprooted it, destroyed entire, | Tận gốc nhổ tâm ấy. |
| indeed in daytime and by night | Người ấy ngày hoặc đêm, |
| will come to a collected mind. | Tất đến được tâm định. |
| 251. There is no fire like lust, | 251. Lửa nào bằng lửa tham! |
| nought seizes like aversion, | Chấp nào bằng sân hận! |
| unequalled is delusion's net, | Lưới nào bằng lưới si! |
| no river's like to craving. | Sông nào bằng sông ái! |
| 252. Other's faults are easy to see | 252. Dễ thay thấy lỗi người, |
| yet hard it is to see one's own, | Lỗi mình thấy mới khó. |
| and so one winnows just like chaff | Lỗi người ta phanh tìm, |
| the faults of other people, while | Như sàng trấu trong gạo. |
| hiding away those of one's own | Còn lỗi mình, che đậy, |
| as crafty cheat the losing throw. | Như kẻ gian dấu bài. |
| 253. Who's always seeing other's faults, | 253. Ai thấy lỗi của người, |
| taking offence, censorious, | Thường sanh lòng chỉ trích, |
| pollutions spread for such a one | Người ấy lậu hoặc tăng, |
| who's far from their exhaustion. | Rất xa lậu hoặc diệt. |

| no peaceful one's without, | Ngoài đây, không sa môn, |
| in manifoldness do folk delight, | Chúng sanh thích hý luận, |
| Tathagatas are manifold-free. | Như Lai, hý luận trừ. |
