| 60. Long is the night for the sleepless, | 60. Ðêm dài cho kẻ thức, |
| long is the league for the weary one, | Ðường dài cho kẻ mệt, |
| samsara's way is long for fools | Luân hồi dài, kẻ ngu, |
| who know not the Dhamma True. | Không biết chơn diệu pháp. |
| 61. If a wayfarer fails to find | 61. Tìm không được bạn đường, |
| one better or equal, | Hơn mình hay bằng mình, |
| steadfast he should fare alone | Thà quyết sống một mình, |
| for a fool's no fellowship. | Không làm bạn kẻ ngu. |
| 62. "Sons have I, wealth have I", | 62. "Con tôi, tài sản tôi", |
| thus the fool is fretful. | Người ngu sanh ưu não, |
| He himself is not his own, | Tự ta, ta không có, |
| how then are sons, how wealth? | Con đâu, tài sản đâu?. |
| 63. Conceiving so his foolishness | 63. Người ngu nghĩ mình ngu, |
| the fool is thereby wise, | Nhờ vậy thành có trí. |
| while "fool" is called that fool | Người ngu tưởng có trí, |
| conceited that he's wise. | Thật xứng gọi chí ngu. |
| 64. Though all through life the fool | 64. Người ngu, dầu trọn đời, |
| might wait upon the wise, | Thân cận người có trí, |
| no more Dhamma can he sense | Không biết được Chánh pháp, |
| than spoon the taste of soup. | Như muỗng với vị canh. |
| 65. Though briefly one intelligent | 65. Người trí, dù một khắc, |
| might wait upon the wise, | Thân cận người có trí, |
| quickly Dhamma he can sense | Biết ngay chân diệu pháp, |
| as tongue the taste of soup. | Như lưỡi với vị canh. |
| 66. Fools of feeble wisdom fare | 66. Người ngu si thiếu trí, |
| enemies to themselves, | Tự ngã thành kẻ thù. |
| making evil kamma | Làm các nghiệp không thiện, |
| which is of bitter fruit. | Phải chịu quả đắng cay. |
| 67. That kamma's not well-made | 67. Nghiệp làm không chánh thiện, |
| from which there is remorse, | Làm rồi sanh ăn năn, |
| of which one senses the result | Mặt nhuốm lệ, khóc than, |
| with weeping and a tear-stained face. | Lãnh chịu quả dị thục. |
| 68. But well-made is that kamma | 68. Và nghiệp làm chánh thiện, |
| which done brings no remorse, | Làm rồi không ăn năn, |
| of which one senses the result | Hoan hỷ, ý đẹp lòng, |
| with glad mind and with joy. | Hưởng thọ quả dị thục. |
| 69. When evil kamma's immature | 69. Người ngu nghĩ là ngọt, |
| the fool thinks it is honeyed, | Khi ác chưa chín muồi; |
| but when the evil has matured | Ác nghiệp chín muồi rồi, |
| then to the fool comes dukkha. | Người ngu chịu khổ đau. |
| 70. Month after month with blady-grass tip | 70. Tháng tháng với ngọn cỏ, |
| the fool may take his food; | Người ngu có ăn uống [1] |
| he's not worth the slightest bit | Không bằng phần mười sáu, |
| of one who Dhamma knows. | Người hiểu pháp hữu vi. |
| 71. As milk, is evil kamma done, | 71. Nghiệp ác đã được làm, |
| so slowly does it sour. | Như sữa, không đông ngay, |
| Smouldering does it follow the fool | Cháy ngầm theo kẻ ngu, |
| like fire with ashes covered. | Như lửa tro che đậy. |
| 72. Truly to his detriment | 72. Tự nó chịu bất hạnh, |
| skill is born to the fool; | Khi danh đến kẻ ngu. |
| ruined is his better nature | Vận may bị tổn hại, |
| and scattered are his wits. | Ðầu nó bị nát tan. |
| 73. For position a fool may wish: | 73. Ưa danh không tương xứng, |
| among the bhikkhus precedence, | Muốn ngồi trước tỷ kheo, |
| in monasteries authority, | ưa quyền tại tịnh xá, |
| from other families honours. | Muốn mọi người lễ kính. |
| 74. Both monks and laymen, let them think | 74. "Mong cả hai tăng, tục, |
| "This was done by me, | Nghĩ rằng (chính ta làm). |
| whatever the works, both great and small, | Trong mọi việc lớn nhỏ, |
| let them depend on me". | Phải theo mệnh lệnh ta" |
| Such the intention of a fool, | Người ngu nghĩ như vậy |
| swollen his greed and conceit. | Dục và mạn tăng trưởng. |
| 75. One is the way to worldly gain, | 75. Khác thay duyên thế lợi, |
| another to Nibbana goes. | Khác thay đường Niết Bàn. |
| Clearly comprehending this | Tỷ kheo, đệ tử Phật, |
| the bhikkhu, Buddha's follower | Hãy như vậy thắng tri. |
| should wallow not in proffered gifts, | Chớ ưa thích cung kính, |
| surrendering instead to solitude. | Hãy tu hạnh viễn ly. |
