Money Idioms – Thành ngữ về tiền

Ex: PhDs are a dime a dozen nowadays.
Very cheap; easily obtained – Mười xu một tá , tầm thường, không có giá trị

Ex: He likes to tell people of his rise from rags to riches.
Earn a fortune after being poor early in life – Nếu bạn “go from rags to riches”, có nghĩa là bạn khởi đầu rất nghèo nhưng sau đó bạn trở nên rất giàu.

Ex: Jakes tried to repair his relationship with his girlfriend after forgetting her birthday, but she viewed his effort as day late and a dollar short.
Too little, too late; both late and insufficient; Too late to be of any benefit. – hết ngày và thiếu một đồng, qúa muộn/chậm trễ không thể nhận bất kỳ lợi ích nào/muộn màng và chuẩn bị kém.

Ex: You’ve been awfully quiet—a penny for your thoughts.
What are you thinking? – Bạn đang nghĩ gì?

Permission to spend or do whatever one wishes; carte blanche – A blank check là một tờ séc có chữ ký với số tiền phải trả được để trống, để cho người được trả tiền điền vào. Vì thế, a blank check có nghĩa là cho một người toàn quyền hành động, làm bất cứ điều gì họ muốn, hay cho là đúng.

Ex:  Some farmers double-dip into federal irrigation and crop subsidies.
Improperly get income from two different sources – kiếm tiền từ 2 nguồn khác nhau cùng một lúc, nhất là khi hành động đó không hợp pháp.

Ex: The Bolshoi is full of indolent time-servers, more interested infeathering their nests than in Swan Lake.
Use one’s influence or power improperly for financial gain – một người làm giàu một cách bất hợp pháp cho bản thân họ bằng cách lợi dụng địa vị của họ hay tài sản của người khác

Having no money at all – không một xu dính túi

Ex: He bought the house for a song five years ago.
At very low cost – giá rất rẻ. Thành ngữ này xuất hiện từ cuối thế kỷ thứ 16, khi những người khách qua đường thường cho một vài xu để nghe một bài hát từ các nhạc sĩ hát dạo trên đường phố.

Offer an opinion, suggest something – đưa ra ý kiến trong một cuộc hội thoại, thường là khi không được mong muốn

Ex:  In the past, an honor system prevented this contagion of brokentrust.
A system of payments that relies on the honesty of those paying – Hệ thống danh dự là một hệ thống thanh toán hoặc kiểm tra chỉ dựa vào sự trung thực của những người có liên quan.
