| Trước khi giải thuyết ấy, Bần-Đạo xin giảng thuyết duy-tâm và duy-vật. | Before explaining this theory, I would like to speak about idealism and materialism. |
| Nếu không thấu hiểu hai thuyết ấy, thì không hiểu thuyết đại-đồng. | If you do not understand these two theories, you will not understand the theory of the Great Harmony. |
| Bần-Đạo đã giảng về Tam-Bửu tức là ba cơ-quan tạo nên con người: Một là Tinh, hai là Khí. Ba là thần. | I have already spoken about the Three Treasures, which are the three elements that make up a human being: the first is the Essence, the second is the Energy, the third is the Spirit. |

| Ba mốn báu ấy tương-liên với nhau, bởi vì mỗi Bửu có Thể-pháp riêng, mà ba xác ấy hiệp lại mới tạo thành hình-ảnh con người. | These three treasures are interconnected, because each one has its own nature, and it is only when they are combined that they form the human being. |
| Bây giờ phân ra : Tinh là Vật, tức nhiên là con vật là thú, như các con thú khác, nghĩa là hình xác đứng về hàng phẩm thú. | Let us now examine them separately: The Essence is matter, it is the animal, the beast, like other animals. | Bình thường các tôn-giáo, đặt ra tên nầy, danh nọ đủ thứ, chí lý là tìm Đấng tạo sanh vạn-vật, lấy hình của Người mà tạo ra linh-quang của loài người tức là cha linh-quang của chúng ta, hay là Cha của vạn loại đó vậy | Ordinarily, religions give different names to this, but the ultimate goal is to find the Creator of all things. He takes His image and create the spiritual light of humanity, which is the father of our spiritual light, or the Father of all things. |
| Bởi vậy, các Tôn-giáo, nhứt là Thiên-Chúa-giáo nói : Con người là Thiên-thần bị hãm tù bởi chơn-linh của chúng ta với Thiên-thần đồng chất với Chí-Tôn | That is why religions, especially Christianity, say that humans are angels imprisoned because our souls are of the same essence with angel as the Supreme Being. |
| Mang lấy xác thịt nầy tức là ở trong cái khám vật-loại. | We are wearing this physical body, which is like a prison of the material world. |
| Còn Phật-giáo cho ta hiểu ba ba báu ấy chẳng khác nào như người cỡi ngự với con ngựa | Buddhism teaches us that these three treasures are like a rider and a horse. |
| Con ngựa ấy là con kỵ vật tức là Tinh, Pháp là dây cương con ngựa, mà trọng-yếu hơn hết là đồ bắt kế con ngụa là hàm thiết, chưn-đưng kềm con ngựa chạy ngay con đường mình muốn tức là Tinh. (Khí? ***) | The horse is the physical body, the Essence. The Dharma is the bridle of the horse. But the most important thing is the bit that controls the horse, the rider's steady legs keep the horse running straight on the path it wants, which is the Essense. |
| Người cỡi ngựa là chơn-linh ta, nghĩa là Thần, Thần là hình ảnh của Chí-Tôn tạo cho ta, vì cớ con người có cao-vọng chưa đạt được thì cao-trọng, chưa đắc huệ-trí mà tưởng mình là Ông Trời con, nên luôn luôn muốn làm Ông Trời hơn, hết. | The rider is the the soul which is the Spirit. The Spirit is the image of the Supreme Being that He created for us. Because humans have high aspirations that they have not yet achieved. They have not yet attained wisdom, but they think they are the God, so they always want to be more like God. |

| Có khó gì đâu mà không hiểu: Đứa học trò ngồi trong lớp thấy ông quan vô, có kỉnh sợ chi đâu, mà tự nói thầm rằng : ông làm quan được trước, tôi cũng làm quan được, trừ khi nào ném sách vở ra chăn trâu, thì mới hết phương làm được. | It is not difficult to understand: a student sitting in class sees an official come in. He is not afraid, but he thinks to himself: "He became an official before me, I can also become an official, unless I throw away my books and become a cowherd, then there is no way I can become an official." |
| Chơn-linh biết mình muốn tu hầu làm Thần, Thánh, Tiên, Phật cũng có thể làm băng được Chí-Tôn mà chớ, bởi vì phẩm-vị Ngài đã dành để sẵn cho các con cái Ngài, nếu người làm được như Ngài vậy. | The Souls know that they can become Gods, Saints, Immortals, or Buddhas if they follow the will of the Supreme Being. This is because the Supreme Being has reserved these ranks for his children, if they can do the same as He has. |
| Bởi vậy dầu chưa làm được ra gì, đã biết mình là Trời tại thế. | Therefore, even if they have not yet accomplished anything, they know that they are God in the world. |
| Có câu chuyện tức cười, bằng cớ hiển-nhiên như Đức Trạng-Trình là Nguyễn-Bỉnh-Khiêm buổi nọ hồi còn bé đi học, có Quan Huyện đến xét trường hay thăm trường chi đó, nghe nói Ngài nổi danh thần-đồng, khi thấy Ngài nhỏ người, thân không cao lớn hơn ai, lại bận áo rộng xùng xình, vì bận bính của ai đó, lết-bết dưới đất tức cười lắm nên ghẹo chơi. | There is a funny story about Nguyen Binh Khiem, a famous Vietnamese scholar and poet. When he was a young boy, a district official came to inspect his school. The official had heard that Nguyen was a child prodigy, but when he saw that he was small and not very tall, he was amused and decided to tease him. |
| Ông Huyện ra một câu đối như vầy : Học-trò là học trò con, quần áo lon-xon là con học-trò. | The official gave Nguyen a couplet to complete: *Student, student, child, Wearing baggy clothes, child student. |
| Ngài liền ứng thinh trả lời liền : Ông Huyện là Ông Huyện thằng, ăn nói lằng-xằng là thằng Ông Huyện. | Nguyen immediately responded with the following couplet: *Official, official, bastard, Talking nonsense, bastard official. |
| Ngài nói liền, thiên-tứ nhứt-định không chịu thua. | Nguyen was quick-witted and never backed down from a challenge. |
| Ấy vậy duy-tâm thì sản-xuất thiên-tài, duy-vật thì sản xuất nhơn-tài. | Thus, idealism produces geniuses, while materialism produces talents. |
| Để rồi sau Bần-Đạo sẽ thuyết ra thiên-tài và nhơn-tài một lần đặc-biệt | Later, I will explain the difference between geniuses and talents in more detail. |

| Đại-đồng là đồng sanh tức-nhiên là chúng sanh đó vậy. | The Great Harmony is co-birth, which means that all living beings are co-born. |
| Ai đã đồng sanh với ta là bạn là anh em của ta | Anyone who is co-born with us is our friend and our brother. |
| Bởi các vật hữu-hình thọ quyền-năng vô-tận vô-biên của Chí-Tôn, đến thế-gian với một mạng sanh, tức là đồng-sanh dầu vật loại, côn-trùng, thảo-mộc, thú-cầm hiệp với loài người là chúng-sanh, tức nhiên là bạn đồng-sanh cả thảy, hể đồng-sanh ta phải nhìn nhau là anh em trong lòng Chí-Tôn mà sản-xuất, vì nhà Phật cấm chúng ta không đặng sát hại sanh-vật, vì là bạn đồng-sanh của chúng ta. | Because all sentient beings have received the infinite and boundless power of the Supreme Being, they come into the world with a single life. This means that all living beings, whether they are plants, animals, or humans, are co-born and are therefore our friends. Since we are co-born, we must look at each other as brothers and sisters in the heart of the Supreme Being. This is why Buddhism forbids us from killing living beings, because they are our co-born friends. |

| Thật ý-nghĩa bạn đồng-sanh, nhìn nhau hiệp một trong nguyên-căn gọi là Đại-đồng. | In its true sense, it means that all living beings are co-born and that when we look at each other, we see that we are united in our origin. This is called the Great Harmony. |
| Hỏi thuyết đại-đồng ngày nay xuất-hiện là tại sao? | Why has the theory of the Great Harmony emerged today? |
| Chúng ta đoán dễ lắm. | It is easy to guess. |
| Cung-kỉnh, tôn-trọng, quý-hoá mạng sanh vạn-loại, loài người đứng phẩm tối cao tối trọng, thay thế hình ảnh Chí-Tôn có quyền-hành làm Chúa Đại-đồng. | It is because people have become more respectful and appreciative of all living beings. Humans, who stand at the highest and most important rank, have replaced the image of the Supreme Being as the Lord of the Great Harmony. |
| Loài người bị tàn-ác, chẳng những sát hai vạn-linh mà thôi, lại chém giết tranh ăn, tranh sống, lấy cường-lực đàn-áp làm căn-bản, dùng bạo tàn làm chúa thiên-hạ. | Humans have become cruel. They not only kill countless living beings, but also fight and kill each other for food and survival. They use violence and oppression as their foundation, and they use cruelty to rule the world. |
| Cái thuyết duy-vật là trong khuôn-luật vật-hình nhứt-định, còn thuyết-duy-tâm chỉ có khuôn khổ thiên-nhiên, theo thuyết duy-vật nào là các cường-quốc trên khắp địa-cầu tìm đủ phương-châm luật-pháp, làm cho thiên-hạ hoá ra đại-đồng ấy là điều mơ-màng, vì không hề đạt vọng được | The theory of materialism is based on the fixed laws of the material world, while the theory of idealism is based on the natural order of things. According to the theory of materialism, the powerful nations of the world are trying to find ways to make the world a Great Harmony, but this is a dream that will never come true. |
| Chưa ai hiểu đặng một người tài-tình quán-chúng, trí-não cao sâu phải hạ mình làm người ngu dốt, Chưa có quyền-năng nào mà đem một đứa ngu dốt lên làm ông Tể-tướng triều-đình, Hàng-phẩm căn-mạng đều do Chí-Tôn sở định | No one has yet understood that a talented person who is respected by everyone must humble himself and become a fool. No one has the power to make a fool a prime minister. The rank and status of all living beings are determined by the Supreme Being. |
| Đã biết không ai ép buộc được, không khuôn luật nào biểu một vị đại văn-sĩ ăn mày ngoài chợ được. | We know that no one can be forced to do anything, and no law can force a great writer to beg on the street. |
| Hể không có hình luật nào làm được, sửa được, thì thuyết đại-đồng thiên-hạ không thành tựu. | If there is no law that can be made or enforced, then the theory of the Great Harmony of the world cannot be achieved. |
| Thuyết ấy kết liễu được là khi nào lấy thuyết hửu thần duy-tâm làm môi giới chung trong sự yêu-ái tôn-trọng nhau trong tình anh em đồng một căn-bản, một máu thịt, một chủng-tộc. | This theory can only be realized when the theory of idealism is used as a common medium for love and respect among people as brothers and sisters with the same origin, the same blood and flesh, and the same race. |
| Vì cớ các đấng giáng cơ bên Âu-châu nói : Loài người sẽ đạt đén địa-vị tối-cao tối-trọng mà họ muốn đạt, là loài người sẽ có nòi-giống một quốc-gia, một Tôn-giáo, ngày giờ nào loài người đạt được ba điều ấy thì thế-giới đại-đồng kết-liễu thành tướng. | That is why the Divine Beings descended in Europe through mediums say: "The human race will reach the highest and most important position that it wants to reach, when the human race will have one race, one nation, and one religion. When the human race achieves these three things, the Great Harmony of the world will be realized." |
| Chí-Tôn đến với loài người, Ngự-Mã-quân của Ngài sợ-sệt Ngài xuống trần phải nguy-hiểm | The Supreme Being comes to the human race. His Ngu Ma Quan (Divine Guardian) is afraid that he will be in danger if he comes down to earth. |
| Ngài đến tạo cho loài người một quốc-gia, một nòi-giống, một Tôn-giáo. | He comes to create one nation, one race, and one religion for the human race. |
| Nhưng Ngự-Mã-Quân của Ngài không muốn cho Ngài đến, nên thay Ngài đến làm cho ba điều ấy thành tựu nên hình. | But his Divine Guardian does not want him to come, so they come in his place to make these three things happen. |
| Nếu ba điều ấy không thành, thì đại-đồng thế-giới là thuyết vẫn còn trong vòng mơ-mộng. | If these three things do not happen, then the Great Harmony of the world will remain a dream. |
